The modem 

Much like a cup of tea is the gateway to a chocolate biscuit (or 12), the modem is the gateway to the internet. It’s like the doorman of your internet connection. The modem’s job is to take the internet signal from your provider (that’s us, if you’re cool enough to have BrawBand) and translate it into something your home network can understand. 

Without a modem, your router and all the Wi-Fi in the world wouldn’t do you a bit of good – you’d be stuck offline, and where’s the fun in that? How are you meant to get carried away watching “Top 10 Dash Cam Vids?” 

The router 

Now, if the modem is the doorman, think of the router like the maître d’, making sure everything gets where it needs to go. The router’s job is to take the internet signal from the modem and distribute it to all your devices – your phone, tablet, laptop, and even that smart telly you’re still to figure out. 

It manages all the traffic, making sure your Netflix stream doesn’t crash when someone else decides to go on a gaming spree. In short, the router keeps everyone happy and connected.
