We’re always being told that we spend too much time online, but a new survey has revealed that those who are yet to embrace the internet could be losing up to £1,000 a year.

While most of us rely on the world wide web for pretty much everything these days, research has found that 45% of the over-65s still don’t feel comfortable being online.

As a result, it’s estimated that they could be missing out on savings of up to £1,000 a year.

There are often great deals to be found online and the internet makes it very easy to shop around. This means that consumers who aren’t online, could be spending an extra £97 on clothes, £158 on entertainment services and £184 on travel. What’s more, they could also be missing out on £156 in state entitlements.

As well as incurring financial losses, 38% of the elderly people who aren’t online say they feel left out or forgotten when digital is pushed as the preferred option by businesses. 34% also say they feel more stressed when a service such as booking a doctor’s appointment, requires an online action.

As the world becomes increasingly digital, it’s critical that everyone can access the internet and feels comfortable doing so. As well as making financial savings and keeping up with how services now operate, the internet plays an important role in helping the elderly stay in touch with friends and family, preventing them from feeling isolated and lonely.
