Top 5 Tips For Maximising Your Broadband During Winter Nights (Without Buffering)

As the nights start drawing in and we spend more time indoors, our home broadband can take a bit of a beating! Whether you’re binging box sets, working late online, gaming, or video calling friends and family, your home network needs to be at its best – especially in stormy Scotland. At BrawBand, here's our top five tips on how to keep your internet running smoothly, all winter long.
Why Winter Evenings Strain Your Broadband Network
You might not realise, but when the clocks go back in October and the temperatures start dropping rapidly, your broadband gets busier! This can be for several reasons:
• More simultaneous users at home in the evenings.
• Streaming more, especially in HD/4K which uses large chunks of bandwidth.
• Increased usage of online gaming, Zoom calls and smart devices which all compete for your WiFi.
• Poor weather conditions can sometimes affect infrastructure, especially in rural areas of Scotland.
When you sign up to BrawBand, you already get impressive full fibre speeds – but here’s how to make the most of your chosen broadband package, regardless of your broadband provider!
1. Position Your Router Wisely
Think of your router as being the heart of your broadband network – if it’s shoved in the back of a cupboard or stuck behind the telly, this is a clear sign that your signal might struggle. Instead, your router should be placed somewhere central in your home, ideally high up and free from obstructions. Avoid positioning it near walls, radiators or thick stone – these are all likely to block your WiFi signal (on the plus side, your fish tank is safe)! And last but not least, don’t be tempted to hide your router behind furniture, even if it looks neater – WiFi needs breathing room.
2. Use A Wired Internet Connection Where Possible
Working from home or gaming for long hours over the winter months? We recommend using an Ethernet cable for critical devices like your laptop or gaming console. This method is faster, more stable and more immune to Wifi signal interference – perfect for streaming in 4K, hopping on live calls or competitive gaming.

3. Reduce Interference From Other Devices
Believe it or not, many of our everyday home devices such as microwaves, baby monitors, smart speakers and even Christmas lights can mess with your broadband connection!
• Switch off or move electronic devices that might cause signal interference
• Keep your router away from electronics that emit signals
If you’re looking for a more advanced solution, you can even log into your router settings and choose the best WiFi channel manually. You can find more information on this here.
And if you have a particularly busy household, here’s a bonus tip: schedule your heavy internet usage smartly. For example, if everyone’s online after 5pm, avoid competing for bandwidth by:
• Downloading large files overnight (like software updates, games, film downloads).
• Using download features on streaming platforms (like Netflix) instead of streaming content live.
• Setting automatic backups or cloud syncs to run during off-peak hours.
4. Consider Upgrading Your Broadband Equipment
Is your router over three years old? If so, it might not support the latest WiFi standards. Ask your provider about WiFi 6 compatible routers (which we can provide at BrawBand) or mesh systems – particularly helpful in larger Scottish homes with thick walls. Here’s a helpful comparison from TechRadar if you're deciding between options.
5. Reboot Your Router Regularly & Keep Firmware Updated
A simple router reboot is an easy, cost-effective way to fix hidden broadband issues and free up valuable bandwidth. Try restarting your router once every week or two and be sure to keep your firmware up to date – most broadband providers (including BrawBand) offer automatic updates, but it’s worth double checking.
Considering Switching Your Broadband Provider?
Still struggling? It might be time to talk to your broadband provider.
•Check if you're on the right broadband package.
• Ask if there’s a better router available.
• See if full fibre has reached your postcode (you can use our postcode checker here if you’re thinking of joining BrawBand!)
