Why Is My WiFi Calling Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It

WiFi calling can feel like a lifesaver, especially when your mobile signal is weaker than a bowl of watered down porridge (yuck, btw!). But when it decides not to work, WiFi calling can go from hero to zero pretty fast. Before you throw your phone oot the window, let’s dive into why WiFi calling might be acting up and get you back to chatting with your pals.

1. Check your WiFi connection – is it feeling strong or struggling?

Let’s start with the basics: if your WiFi connection itself is spotty, your calls will be too. WiFi calling relies on a strong, stable internet connection, so if the signal’s dropping or is slower than a sloth on holiday, there’s your first suspect, duh.

      2. Is WiFi calling actually enabled on your phone?

Sometimes, the simplest answer is the right one: is WiFi calling even switched on? Phones don’t usually enable WiFi calling by default, so you might need to activate it in settings. Here’s how to check:

      • iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular > WiFi Calling and switch it on.
      • Android: Head to Settings > Network & Internet (or Connections depending on your model) > WiFi Calling and enable it.

If it’s already enabled, try turning it off and on again. (Aye, we know – it sounds like a cliché, but sometimes that’s all it takes!)

        3. Is your phone too ancient?

While most modern phones support WiFi calling, not every model is onboard with it, and some carriers restrict WiFi calling to certain devices. Double-check that your phone and mobile carrier support WiFi calling – you might find this info on your carrier’s website or in your phone’s user manual.

If your phone doesn’t support WiFi calling, dinnae fret! You can still use other internet-based calling apps, like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Google Voice, as a workaround.

        4. Is your carrier being a tad stingy?

Sometimes, it’s your network provider being silly. If you’ve recently updated your phone or made changes to your plan, the network settings might be acting up and refusing to let WiFi calling through.

Check for a carrier settings update. You’ll usually find this under your phone settings (About Phone for Android or General settings on iPhone). Or give your provider a ring and ask them to confirm WiFi calling is all set up on their end. If they can actually pick up on their end, that is!

          5. When in doubt, switch it off and on again

Sometimes, your phone just needs a fresh start – just like us after a long day! Restarting the device can clear up any temporary glitches, and resetting network settings can also help if your WiFi calling’s stubbornly refusing to work.
