Why Won’t My Device Connect to the Internet?

We’ve all been there: you’re all set for a cosy evening of streaming your favourite shows, but suddenly, your device is having a tantrum and refuses to connect to the internet. Frustrating, right? Don’t worry! In this blog, we’ll explore some common reasons why your device might be having trouble connecting to your broadband and how to troubleshoot the issue like a pro, so you can get back to your shows.
- Check the basics
The first step in your connectivity journey is to check your WiFi’s settings.
- Wi-Fi enabled?: ensure your device’s Wi-Fi is turned on. It might sound simple, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the most effective!
- Airplane mode: make sure your device isn’t in airplane mode, which disables all wireless connections.
- Verify your network connection
Is your device trying to connect to the right network, or is it getting confused?
- Correct network: confirm that your device is trying to connect to your home Wi-Fi network, not a neighbour’s or a public network.
- Password problems: double-check that you’re entering the correct Wi-Fi password. If you recently changed it, make sure to update your device accordingly.
- Router and modem status
Sometimes the culprits are the unsung heroes of your internet: the router and modem.
- Power it up: ensure your router and modem are alive and kicking. Look for any lights flashing like they’re dancing at a ceilidh. If they’re not, give them a good old unplug and replug!
- Restart the devices: A good ol’ restart is like a magic spell for your tech! Unplug the router and modem, wait a wee bit (about 30 seconds), then plug them back in – they might need a moment to wake up!
- Signal strength matters
If you’re trying to connect from the other end of the house, you might be feeling the effects of a weak signal.
- Move closer: if you’re miles away from the router, try moving closer. Think of it like trying to get a better view of the Highland Games from the back of the crowd!
- Interference: other gadgets can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal, just like an overly chatty pub mate can ruin your quiet pint. Keep your router away from microwaves and cordless phones – they can be a right pain in the bahookie.
BrawBand offers handy mesh extenders, to help your WiFi signal reach every nook and cranny of the house.
- Check for outages
It’s possible that you’re not the problem after all, but you should double check that with your therapist. Kidding!
- Check with your broadband provider to see if they’ve had a wee hiccup. If there’s an outage in your area, you can put your feet up and enjoy a good book while you wait.
If you’ve tried everything and your device is still sulking, it might be time to call for reinforcements… BrawBand! We’re always happy to chat the problem through with you and help you out (with your broadband, of course).
